Under Cabinet Lighting for Kitchens: Why It Makes More Difference Than You Think
If you asked homeowners who have completed a kitchen renovation what they would do differently, a significant proportion would say they would have paid more attention to the lighting. Specifically, the lighting at worktop level. Under cabinet lighting is the element of kitchen design that is most consistently underspecified, most often added as an afterthought, and most clearly missed once a kitchen is complete without it.
Why worktop lighting matters
The fundamental purpose of under cabinet lighting is task illumination. When you are preparing food at a worktop, the ambient lighting from ceiling fixtures is typically behind you, which means you are working in your own shadow. A well-positioned LED strip or recessed light source under the upper cabinet, directed at the worktop, illuminates the working surface properly and makes kitchen tasks significantly easier and more comfortable.
Beyond the functional argument, under cabinet lighting also creates the warmth and depth of atmosphere that distinguishes a kitchen with a thoughtful lighting scheme from one without. When the upper cabinet lighting is on and the ceiling lights are dimmed, the result is a kitchen that feels genuinely inviting.
Types of under cabinet lighting
LED strip lighting
LED strips are the most widely used under cabinet lighting solution. They are flexible, easy to install during a kitchen fit-out, and available in a range of colour temperatures. The key specification decision is the colour temperature: warm white (2700K to 3000K) creates an amber, residential warmth that suits most domestic kitchens. Cooler temperatures (4000K and above) are brighter and more clinical and are generally more appropriate for professional or utility spaces.
Recessed puck lights
Recessed LED puck lights installed into the underside of upper cabinets are a neater solution than strip lighting when the underside of the cabinet will be visible and the light source needs to be discreet. They create focused pools of light on the worktop rather than a continuous wash, which suits some kitchen layouts better than others.
Planning under cabinet lighting correctly
Under cabinet lighting should be planned as part of the kitchen design, not added at the end. The power supply, switch or dimmer location, and the housing within or under the cabinet all need to be considered before the cabinets are manufactured. Retrofitting under cabinet lighting into an existing kitchen is possible but invariably more complicated and less tidy than integrating it from the outset.
