The question of whether to integrate kitchen appliances is one that has a design answer and a practical answer. The design answer is that integration produces a cleaner, more coherent aesthetic, and in a high-specification kitchen it is almost always preferable. The practical answer depends on which appliances you are considering integrating, and whether the quality of the integrated options meets your requirements for performance.
Which appliances are typically integrated?
In a fully integrated kitchen, the refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, wine cooler, and sometimes the oven and microwave are all concealed behind cabinetry doors that match the rest of the kitchen. The effect is a kitchen where, with doors closed, the appliances are invisible. The room reads as a single composed entity rather than a kitchen with domestic appliances placed within it.
The aesthetic case for integration
Freestanding appliances, however well-designed, create visual noise in a kitchen. The stainless steel of a freestanding dishwasher, the handle and branding of a freestanding refrigerator, the visible gap between an appliance and the surrounding cabinetry: all of these interrupt the visual flow of a carefully designed kitchen. In a kitchen where significant investment has been made in cabinetry, stone, and joinery, a freestanding dishwasher in the base run is a jarring compromise.
Full integration resolves this. When the dishwasher door matches the cabinet doors either side of it, when the refrigerator is concealed behind a pair of full-height cabinet panels, and when the wine cooler sits within a run of storage with no visual interruption, the kitchen achieves a quality of calm and intention that is immediately felt.
Performance considerations
The concern some homeowners have about integrated appliances is that integration means compromise on performance. This was a legitimate concern a decade ago. It is much less so today. The major appliance manufacturers have invested heavily in their integrated ranges, and the performance of an integrated Miele, AEG, or Siemens refrigerator or dishwasher is comparable in every meaningful way to their freestanding equivalents.
Practical considerations
Integrated appliances are slightly more complex and expensive to service than freestanding ones, because access sometimes requires removing the cabinetry panel. This is worth factoring into your thinking, particularly for appliances that are used intensively. A door hinge that needs adjustment or a water connection that needs attention is more straightforward on a freestanding appliance. In practice, however, modern integrated appliances are reliable enough that this is rarely a significant consideration.
